If you’re new to poker, Texas Hold’em is one of the easiest variants to learn. Each player receives two private cards, called hole cards, while five community cards are dealt face-up on the table. Players use these cards to make the best possible five-card poker hand, with betting rounds taking place throughout the game.
If you’re heading to Goa and want to experience live poker, casinos such as Deltin Royale and Deltin JAQK offer live poker experiences. However, understanding the basic poker rules first can help you feel more comfortable when you sit down at a table.
First Things First, What is Poker Anyway?
Poker is a broad term that can be used to refer to a number of card games with similar rules. In a typical game of poker, players are dealt cards by a dealer, and, over the course of the game, they proceed to bet money based on how strong or weak they think their hand is. A hand is simply the set of cards held by a player.
There are different versions of poker, like Razz, Omaha, and even Indian Poker. Texas Hold’em, however, is the most popular kind of poker, and it’s also among the easiest to learn. In this guide, you’ll learn the poker rules for Texas Hold’em.
How to Play Poker?
Playing Texas Hold’em is easy if you know the poker rules. The rules, too, are simple. Here’s how a standard game of this poker game goes.
Step 1: Placing the Blind Bets
The blinds are two mandatory bets placed before the game begins, so you get some money in the pot before the cards are dealt. The player seated on the left of the dealer places the small blind, and the next player posts the big blind, which is often two times the small blind.
Step 2: Dealing the Hole Cards
Every player is dealt two private cards, called the hole cards. Your hole cards are only visible to you.
Step 3: Preflop Betting
This is the first round of betting. As per poker rules, during a round of betting, you can either:
- Fold: Surrender your cards and quit
- Call: Match the current bet
- Raise: Increase the current bet
Step 4: Dealing the Flop
Now, the dealer places three community cards face-up, so they are visible to all players. You can use any of these cards to form your best 5-card hand.
Step 5: Flop Betting
This is the second betting round. You can choose to fold, call, or raise, depending on how the three community cards work with your two hole cards.
Step 6: Dealing the Turn
The dealer adds a fourth community card, called the turn card.
Step 7: Turn Betting
The third round of betting takes place.
Step 8: Dealing the River
The dealer now adds the fifth and last community card, called the river card. You can now use your two hole cards and these five community cards to form your hand.
Step 9: River Betting
This is the last round of betting.
Step 10: Showdown
If more than one player remains after the last round of betting, they reveal their hand simultaneously, and the better hand wins. If only one player remains after the river betting, they automatically win.
Note:
An ace can be used as the highest card in a straight (10-J-Q-K-A) or as the lowest card in a straight (A-2-3-4-5).
Poker Hands Ranked from Best to Worst
Now that you know how to play poker, check out what the different hands are and how they are ranked. In standard Texas Hold’em hand rankings, a royal flush is the highest-ranking hand and the lowest-ranking made hand is a high card.
- Royal Flush: Five cards from ten to ace straight, all the same suit
- Straight Flush: Any five cards in order, all from the same suit
- Four-of-a-Kind: Four cards of the same kind (like a nine or a five or an ace), one of each suit.
- Full House: Three cards of the same rank, and two other matching cards of a different rank (like three nines and two fours)
- Flush: Any five non-consecutive cards of the same suit
- Straight: Five cards in order, but from different suits
