The best of Royal and Ritzy Rajasthan: 5 Heritage Hotels that redefine luxury

What happens when the royalty of Rajasthan is married to the tradition of warm hospitality prevalent here? Heritage properties that redefine uber luxury are what you get. These are forts and palaces that were once official residences of the royal families and are now open to guests. While in some cases the whole property has been transformed into a hotel, in others a sizable portion has been let out, with the family members continuing to reside in the remaining area.

Consequent to multiplicity in dynastic rules (Riyasats / Thikanas), Rajasthan is home to a myriad range of fortifications and palaces, and each of them is unique in its way. These heritage properties reflect not only the royal grandeur of Rajputana’s kings, but they are also symbolic of the architectural styles and immaculate craftsmanship prevalent then and are thus manifestations of cultural heritage too. Additionally, some of them were built in secluded areas in the midst of nature (atop a hill, middle of a lake, bank of a river) and are now peaceful retreats into nature. Many have been picked up by multinational hospitality chains, and these provide a sophisticated stay to the modern guest.

Read on to find out about 5 of the best lesser-known heritage properties in the land of royals.

Hill Fort, Kesroli

Located in Alwar, which is known as the Scotland of India for its numerous forts, Hill Fort Kesroli is a 700-year-old property turned into a heritage hotel by Neemrana Hotels Group. The fort that dates back to the 14th century was built by Yaduvanshi Rajputs (believed to be from the lineage of Lord Krishna). The architecture focuses on turrets, ramparts, and arched verandas. Equipped with all modern accommodation facilities like comfortable rooms with historic decor, a terrace pool with sundeck and spa, and local and international delicacies, the hotel is surrounded completely by hills and fields and thus provides a splendid 360-degree natural view.

Welcomhotel Khimsar Fort & Dunes, Khimsar

Khimsar Fort Hotel is a Welcomhotel by ITC Hotels. It is situated in Nagaur district and is close to Jodhpur city. The fortification is spread over a massive 44515 sq km, including sprawling lawns, orchards, and open courtyards, and a part of the fort has been turned into a hotel that is personally overseen by the present-day royal family members. It was built in the 15th century by the royal family of Jodhpur, and just as the city is famous for its great hospitality, so is the hotel. There are several experiences within the hotel, in addition to soaking in the natural bounty that is aplenty around. Through just a small drive, one can be in the middle of the dunes. With 89 suites, Khimsar Fort is palatial and sure to please luxury seekers.

RAAS Devigarh, Devigarh

If you’re looking for a property that is away from the city hustle and bustle, explore RAAS Devigarh in the Rajsamand district. It is about a 45-minute drive from Udaipur city and overlooks Delwara village. Once the residence of the royals of Delwara, there are royal suites and a flurry of Marwari architectural specimens – horse murals, mirrored antechambers, courtyards, turrets, swings, and arches. The property is well-equipped for all your ritzy pleasures, and with the hotel being set on the Aravallis, the aerial view from the fort is beyond amazing.

Ajit Bhawan, Jodhpur

As per some records, Ajit Bhawan in Jodhpur is the first heritage hotel in the state. The Bhawan is nestled between two of the most defining sites in the city – the Umaid Bhawan Palace (itself an epitome of opulent hospitality) that sits atop a hill and the Mehrangarh Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. What was once the official residence of one of the royal family members is now a full-blown luxury hotel with a very fine collection of vintage cars, and this is one of the major attractions here. There are, of course, a variety of suites and rooms to choose from, as well as Swiss tents. An array of spa and wellness options is available, and so are the options to dine. Overall, Ajit Bhawan is a wholesome royal experience.

Neemrana Fort-Palace, Neemrana

Yet another Neemrana Hotels property, it is perhaps their finest. Touted as one of the best weekend luxury getaways in Delhi NCR, Neemrana Fort-Palace is a site to behold, especially at night when the property is lit like gold. It dates back to the 15th century and is spread across a sprawling campus, with nine palace wings built over 14 levels tiered into a hill. There are enchanting hospitality treats to add to the natural charm – a zipline, an Ayurvedic spa, hanging gardens, and two pools over the horizon. There are more than 4 restaurants/diners on the campus, each offering special varieties of Indian and International cuisines.
